The Short Answer

The price to hire a mentalist ranges from free to over $100,000.

The Long Answer

Mentalism shows are not the same. The experience, demand, and skill sets of mentalists also vary. Here are reasons why the price of hiring a mentalists can vary.

Factors That Affect the Price of Mentalists

  • Magnitude of Reactions: It generally costs more money to hire a mentalist who elicits stronger reactions than another mentalist.
  • Specialization: For example, a mentalist who is specialized for corporate events can cost more than mentalists who primarily focus on entertaining at colleges, cruise ships, personal private events, or a different market.
  • Demand: When a mentalist is in high demand, this tends to drive up cost.
  • Customization: Many mentalists offer customization as an add-on. Due to the higher time investment required to customize material, a higher price is charged accordingly.
  • Opportunity: This is rare, but some mentalists will charge less money if an event offers special opportunities for career growth. For example, if there is a red carpet event with high-profile celebrities, the mentalist may perform for free to obtain photographs with a celebrity. Another example is an event in which all audience members are meeting planners. Because meeting planners can become a source of recurring bookings for high-end events, some mentalists who normally command over $10,000 will perform for free.
  • Desirability: Imagine that an event is in a tourist location that has enjoyable attractions. In this situation, a mentalist may charge less money because the overall experience is more pleasant. However, if appearing at an event requires undesirable sacrifices, the mentalist may charge more money.
  • Theatrical training: Some mentalists are also trained with acting lessons and/or theater courses. Because this training costs money and required time investment, mentalists with this training may charge more.

Pricing Models That Mentalists May Use

Mentalists also use different pricing models. Examples are included below.

  • Fee Per Appearance:  Some mentalists charge based on making an appearance at an event. In this situation, it does not matter whether the mentalist  entertains people for two minutes or two hours. The price is still the same because it counts as one appearance.
  • Fee Based on Duration of Round Trip:  There are mentalists who charge based on how many days a round trip takes. For example, imagine that you hire a mentalist to travel from San Francisco in California to Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. Imagine that the round trip takes three days. The mentalist may charge you based on three days of time investment to do the event, whereas a local event that requires one day of time investment would have cost much less.
  • Fee Based on Service:  Mentalists can charge different prices for different services they offer. For example, a stage show may cost more than booking a mentalist to walk around, performing for one small group at a time. There are also mentalists who offer hypnosis, keynote speaking messages, team building activities, and other features.
  • Fee Per Person:  This pricing model can apply to both public events and private events. If it costs $100 per ticket at a nice theater, then number of tickets sold affects the price. Similarly, some mentalists can also price private events based on the number guests.
  • Fee Based on Value Added:  It is possible for a mentalists to charge based on how much value they offer a client. If a mentalist's service can generate large profits for a corporation, a higher price may be charged.
  • Fee Based on Event Type:  In this pricing model, a mentalist may have one price for doing a wedding, a separate price to perform at a corporate event, and a completely different price to perform for a non-profit organization.
