Generally, a wedding magician does not perform on a stage and talk through a microphone. Anything is possible, but it is generally less common. If a magician performed on stage at a wedding, it would require changing the schedule to accommodate a magic performance on stage.
The alternate concept is that the magician performs for a few guests at a time during the cocktail hour and/or reception. This does not require changing a schedule or plans. Instead, the magician operates within the schedule that already exists. In the video below, you can see examples of magic at cocktail hours and receptions.
A magician does not replace a pianist, DJ (disc jockey), emcee (master of ceremonies), or other existing entertainment. During a wedding, the magician and pianist can both entertain guests at the same time. During the reception, there are guests who do not dance. Some guests are socially uncomfortable dancing in front of other people (during the reception). Other guests may have physical restrictions such as knee problems, back problems, foot problems, etc. and therefore choose not to dance. Finally, some guests simply do not enjoy dancing. A magician can entertain the guests who do not dance. There are also guests who can experience the magic while they’re taking breaks from dancing. (This includes guests who step outside of the venue’s building.)
In the United Kingdom, it is common and established to hire a magician for a wedding. In the United States, wedding magicians are less common. Due to the advancements in technology (i.e. spread of ideas on the internet), the popularity of wedding magicians is rising. In large cities like Philadelphia, the concept is more common.
Most or all guests at a wedding are adults. It is important to hire a magician who offers services for adults. When you see event guests in a magician's images or video, consider the age of the guests.
If a talent agency is based out of a highly industrialized city, and the talent agency has a full team of employees, there is a good chance the agency can supply a wedding magician. These agencies may be challenging to find. This is because they tend to specialize in musical entertainment and don’t necessarily list magic on their websites. Another issue is that many talent agencies are modeling agencies, not entertainment agencies. Some entertainment agencies, such as Mole Street Artists, never partner with magicians.
